The amount you\u2019re offered has a lot to do with your sport and recent changes to NCAA scholarship rules. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Scholarships can be full or partial scholarships.<\/strong>&nbsp;It\u2019s up to the coach to divide their scholarship money among athletes. That could mean they offer a full ride to one extremely high-level recruit, or it could mean they spread the money out among multiple athletes. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>You can negotiate scholarship offers<\/strong>. Still, full-ride scholarships are the goal for many athletes, as they typically cover tuition and fees, books, room and board, supplies, and sometimes even living expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">While headcount scholarships (which were full-ride scholarships) were eliminated starting in the 2025 school year for most D1 schools to make all sports equivalency scholarships, you <em>can<\/em>&nbsp;increase your chances of getting more scholarship money across D1, D2 and NAIA. For example, if you fill a specific and important role on the team\u2014such as a baseball or softball pitcher\u2014you\u2019re more likely to receive a larger offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">You can also &nbsp;leverage multiple recruiting offers to get coaches to increase the amount they are willing to give you. Sometimes, just moving down a division level will get you more money. Coaches can help their prospective athletes obtain financial aid rewards, but they do not have any scholarship money to give \u00a0them.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In many cases, <a href=\"\/blog\/what-need-know-ivy-league-athletic-scholarship\">Ivy League schools<\/a> can meet most of the cost of tuition; families with an annual income less than $65,000 don\u2019t make any contribution to their student-athlete\u2019s education, while families with an annual household income between $65-$180,000 could be expected to contribute somewhere between 10 to 18 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In other words, don\u2019t let a lack of athletic scholarship dollars deter you from pursuing an Ivy League education as a student-athlete.<a id=\"Play\" name=\"Play\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"play\">Do you have to get a scholarship to compete in college sports?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Typically, there are more spots available on a team than coaches have scholarships to offer. So, not getting a scholarship doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re out of luck. Student-athletes can walk onto a team, which means trying out without receiving a scholarship. Sometimes,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatodayhss.com\/story\/sports\/high-school\/2017\/04\/13\/the-5-most-commonly-asked-questions-about-being-a-college-walk-on\/76917039007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">athletes are asked to walk on<\/a>, in which case they are called \u201cpreferred walk-ons.\u201d You may also walk on to a team without a scholarship for one year and be given a scholarship the next year, depending on your perceived value. This may change though with the new roster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsasports.org\/blog\/ncaa-scholarship-roster-limits-2024\">limits at the D1 level<\/a> &#8211; ask an NCSA expert like a recruiting coach and college coaches you&#8217;ve been speaking with for more details on how they plan on managing their roster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"eligible\">How do you know if you\u2019re eligible for an athletic scholarship?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To receive a scholarship to an NCAA D1 or D2 program, student-athletes must meet certain&nbsp;<a href=\"\/ncaa-eligibility-center\/eligibility-requirements\">eligibility requirements<\/a>. They require you to meet a minimum academic standard and be considered an amateur athlete. However, just because you meet the minimum requirements for the school you want to play at doesn\u2019t mean you will receive a scholarship. However, these offers are non-binding; they are unofficial verbal contracts between a coach and athlete. Nothing is set in stone until the student-athlete signs their <a href=\"\/recruiting\/managing-recruiting-process\/national-signing-day\">financial aid agreement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Most commonly, the student-athlete might never have had the scholarship to begin with. There are a few different situations in which this might occur:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Most commonly, the student-athlete might never have had the scholarship to begin with.&nbsp;<a href=\"\/recruiting\/managing-recruiting-process\/verbal-offers-and-commitments\">Verbal agreements are non-binding<\/a>; they do not guarantee you a spot on the roster or a scholarship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">If you are injured, depending on the school you attend and whether it happened outside of games or practice, your scholarship can be pulled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Coaches can decide not to renew your scholarship for the next year. This isn\u2019t a case of the scholarship being \u201ctaken away\u201d since they are typically only year-long contracts, but it can still come as a surprise to some student-athletes. Non-renewals can happen for various reasons, including a new coach joining the program, getting into trouble on or off the field, poor performance, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">If you are not eligible to compete for any reason\u2014poor academics, not in good standing with the school, etc.\u2014a coach is not likely to keep you on scholarship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Kinds\">What other kinds of scholarships can you get?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Because most college student-athletes do not have full-ride scholarships, it\u2019s beneficial to look into earning an academic scholarship as a supplemental form of aid. There are minimum academic standards student-athletes must meet to be considered for an academic scholarship, and these are different for every college and university. Remember, D3 schools only offer non-athletic scholarships, like academic scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ncsa-callout callout\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Insider tip:<\/strong> Academic scholarships are much more secure than athletic scholarships.
